SCHZ: A Modest Bet On Lower Rates Is Reasonable
Schwab U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF offers low fees, broad investment-grade exposure, and intermediate duration, making it a solid long-term diversifier. SCHZ has outperformed long-duration peers like TLT with lower volatility, but current conditions favor even shorter-duration instruments such as CLIP. Despite intermediate bonds' advantages, short-duration ETFs like CLIP offer similar yields with less risk in the current rate environment.

SCHZ: Tariffs More Moderate Than Expected
There is dissent in the FOMC, with traditionally cautious members around inflation indicating that it's time to cut. With mixed but ultimately positive underlying macro data, we are inclined to agree as copper tariff threats are gutted and trade deals mean tariffs discounted from Liberation Day levels. SCHZ: Not A Lot Of Value To Be Had
Schwab U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF has had a flat return over the past year, underperforming other investment options. Rising yields on treasuries have been the main reason for SCHZ's underperformance. Despite the risks, treasuries remain in demand, which could limit downside risk and potentially drive gains in the future.

Inflation continues to hammer fixed-income products, SCHZ included. While building positions in bonds now is starting to look a lot more attractive as yields rise, further downside exists if the Fed reiterates its rate-hiking cycle (as it has indicated).
